The sum of threee consecutive intergers is negative 72. Find the numbers

-25, -24, -23

We will let x be the first, so the next is x+1 and the third is x+2:

x + x+1 + x+2 = -72
3x + 3 = -72
3x = -75
x = -25

-25+1 = -24
-25+2 = -23

Hope this helps! :)

Let x be the first integer.

It follows that since the integers are consecutive, the next two integers will be

x + 1
x + 2

We know that the sum of these integers will be -72; therefore

x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = -72

Now, solve for x.

First, grouping like-terms,

3x + 3 = -72

Move the 3 to the right hand side,

3x = -72 - 3
3x = -75

Divide both sides by 3,

x = -25

Therefore, since x represented the first consecutive integer, we can obtain the next two easily; they would be -24 and -23.

Therefore, our three numbers are -25, -24, -23.

equation is
x+(x+1)+(x+2)= - 72
3x + 3 = -72
3x = -72 - 3
3x = -75
x = - 25

now plug -25 in to the eq. and solve
