Because the church and most of its followers are hypocrites. There is no hateful, judgemental God watching your every move. Sex is not a sin, there is no sin. Plenty of Christians are adulterers. I had sex with a very devout Christian who is married. She did it because I had what she wanted, simple as that.

First, like so many others you are reading the Ten Commandments with a 21st. Century mentality as if they were written in English and for people who think the way we do. This is NOT to say that the Ten Commandments are not applicable today, only that we fail to understand how they were intended. Firstly, the Ten Commandments originally were known as "The Decalogue," or The Ten Words. These 'Ten Words' were inscribed in God's Holy Language (rather than contemporary English) and were divided into the 'do' and the 'do not' lists. Originally the Ten Commandments were ten single words written in a simpler language that conveyed a meaning nearly impossible to translate into a single English word. For example, 'thou shall not kill...' A more correct translation for this Commandment into English would be: "No-murder," if a single word existed in English that could express this meaning. None-the-less, in our own day and age 'murder' is still unacceptable while 'killing' is sometimes unavoidable and can even be very necessary. Adultery, thievery, lying and covetous conduction all defy acceptable moral norms and fall into the 'do not' category. What is so surprising about this? The first Five Commandments are addressed to a People who accepted a Covenant with God and merely point out the 'Rules of Conduct.' Again, what is so surprising about this? As an atheist you must consider yourself an urbane and sophisticated person much too intelligent to believe in God. The Ten Commandments were intended for a simplier People so why are you even bothering us simple-folk on the Religious and Spirituality forum of Yahoo Questions and Answers??? Are you perhaps not only an atheist but also a... Troll? Inquiring minds want to know! H

Pretty much people just make their own rules. Personally... the ten commandments I feel, are more of a suggestion to follow to be a better person and not so much a rule. Like for instance: I would if a world crisis were to happen, steal food for my sons if they were starving.
Not all parents are worthy to be honored and obeyed if a father is molesting or beating them.
And I believe, an eye for an eye in murder if someone tortured and killed one of my kids you can damn well bet that I would be after that person before the law ever got the chance.
I would even go as far as saying the do not covet thy neighbors wife could have some exceptions too, say a man was beating and hurting his wife and she found a man that fell in love with her and that lead to an affair or a divorce she would most likely be safer and happier with the new man and she should go for it. The
part about sex is a good rule, to keep a person clean, and healthy start in life but that is pretty much all it is good for.

I don't think they even try to follow this rule.

According to the Associated Press.

22 percent of married men have strayed at least once during their married lives.
14 percent of married women have had affairs at least once during their married lives.
17 percent of divorces in the United States are caused by infidelity.

That's nothing to sneeze at.

I think that people pick and choose which rules to follow everyday. Justifications can be made for doing anything that we want. After all it's a rule not to speed, but I would bet 95% of the people on the road right now are going at Least 4 mph faster then the speed limit.

That is why bad things happen in this world. It's just a shame that people don't understand that every choice we make will have consequences (either pain here on earth or at judgment day)

For one thing: Do not commit adultery is one of the 10 commandments. For another: premarital sex is not hurting anyone in their mind. But when you cheat on someone (wether or not you are married) everyone knows that's a taboo "wrong" to betray someone & a relationship like that. :)
Right, alot of people know that there's many who don't care what the church says cuz they don't believe. But, some still have the common decency to know not to hurt others & betray a relationship. Even as teenagers dating, you may not know premarital sex is bad. But they all know that cheating on someone you tell that you are in a relationship with only them is wrong.

In my opinion if you are having sex before marriage knowing it is wrong, usually you're young and dumb. But by the time you are married you should realize the sin involved in committing adultery. I am not saying it is any better or worse to commit a sin because of your age, I am just saying the younger you are the less likely you are to think of the seriousness involved.

Because on this earth, we have boundaries. Some people choose to risk it all by breaking that boundary. Demons control them. We must pray for them.

Believe it or not, some people don't care about what church has to say about their personal business. I, for one, don't. Church is only an authority if you believe its teachings.
