I payed my way through two years of College as a mascot. Like many, I lost my athletic scholarship to a injury, and had to pay the bills. Some friends and I, along with my girl friend and her parents, as well as mine, designed and built my costume, and then I pitched it to the University, and built my own scholarship. I met and worked with the San Diego Chicken, and The Philadelphia Fanatic. I tried out for the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, but the money was awful! I became so busy doing University gigs all over the state, I made a pretty good living being hired out. The U let me borrow the costume on non-event periods for Community Service gigs.

It by all means is nothing but work. You will Sweat like you cannot imagine. I was in great shape to start with playing football, and baseball; when my injury shut me down I went to the pool. I lost somewhere around 6-8 pounds a night working "The Bird" (I was a Cardinal). The team trainers would have to work with me through the course of the games, to keep me hydrated, and keep from tearing hamstrings.

It requires a lot of exercise to do a great job... Lots of dancing (sort of); lots of running (not easy in size 18 basketball shoes); lots of everything.

I used to run the sidelines for our soccer team and our players would take extra risks diving after balls knowing the Bird would catch them and break their fall. I used to warm up the pitching staff in costume; and made a pretty good tackling dummy.

I used a tricycle, a four wheeler (courtesy of a local motorcycle shop); Roller Blades and the whole thing. I once swung from the radio booth aka Tarzan from a rope hung in the gym for a basketball game.

I carried a bucket with towels and "Windex" (actually water) to clean the tops of the "Chrome Dome" fans. A little "Windex" for the Ref always got a big laugh (you definitely want to meet and set that up before the game with the head Umpire).

You'll get the hang of signing autographs from the little kids, if you have fun at this job. They are great!!!! Remember, nobody knows the "man behind the costume", so really let it all hang out! Let it Go!

Like a skit as a human or a bulldog. DO the Napolean Dynamite dance. It is repetitive and annoying by amatuers, but if you really study and emulate the moves you'll be a hit
