silver subscription is just the free xbox live subscription that allows you to download from the marketplace and show off you gamerscore to people online.
get the gold subscription because it is really worth it. I spend most of my 360 time playing against other people, and find it hard to have as much fun on single player.
If you do get a gold subscription, buy the xbox live 12 month starter kit from a store. It comes with a headset for talking, 12 month subscription, 500 points for marketplace (maybe more), and 20 dollars off any xbox 360 game.

I'm not sure what you mean by silver edition. If you are meaning silver account, no you cannot. You have to have the gold account to be able to play games against others online.
It's worth the $7.99 a month!
