when looking at things like this, you'll always be dealing with averages because every baby is different, and develops at a slightly different pace. My son was holding his head up at 2 months and sitting by himself at 5 months. That was a little earlier than average, but that was mostly because we purposefully gave him opportunity to build those muscles. If your baby lays down or is held a lot, he'll likely take a bit longer to exhibit those kinds of developmental milestones.
Long story short, don't feel good if your baby is quicker or bad if your baby is slower than average. In 10 years I guarantee that will be the last thing on his or your mind!! Happy parenting!

My son held his head up at about 2 months and can sit unsupported now at 5 months, although he topples to the left or right at times when reaching for things.

At just over 3 months he was able to hold his own head steady. He's almost 4 months now and isn't sitting unsupported yet. I did buy him a Bumbo chair that allows him to sit upright. (Prince Lionheart is another brand of the same type of chair), you can get them at babies r us, target, walmart.
