the cost of upgrading to 1GB of ram and minimum of 80GB hard drive would be pointless , in other words you need at least 100 GB and it would still be slower than XP add that to the cost of vista anyway its better to get a new pc and one with a dual core processor at the very least 160GB hard drive and a must have 1GB ram , so all said and done save your money , buy a new pc and have not only vista but also some warranty lol , yes you can run it on smaller amounts of ram but why have a snail when the hare (xp) will beat it ?????

It depends upon the model number of your laptop, as to how much it can be upgraded. If it's currently got 384mb it's probably fairly old (possiby too old to run Vista). Laptops normally have 2 slots for memory- if you're lucky, yours might have 3.
In any event you've either got 256mb in one slot + 128mb in the other, or 128mb chips occupying 3 slots. The problem is, laptops which originally came with 128mb probably won't recognize single 512mb chips, and that's what you need to somehow reach 1 gig.
Go to HP's website and look at the support section for your laptop model- it will state what the maximum amount of memory you can install is. But remember, most machines more than 2 years old will run much slower under Vista than Windows XP, if they can run it at all! It's not a good upgrade for 75% of computer users, it's ok for brand-new machines that are designed for it.

please save your moiney. there is nothing in vista that you need to have. yeah it looks pretty, but you won;t be able to get the pretty parts with the system you have. there is more to upgrading to vista thann just RAM. if that was the case, then the majoprity of people would be running vista, not XP. it is an overpriced piece of software taht provides few advantages over XP. most of the advantages are in security, anbd that has already been poked full f holes.
bottom line, save your money, don;t upgrade to vista. wait till you get a better system that comes with vista.
besides, your system will never run as fast on vista as it does on XP. and the reason that they tell you you need 1 GB is b/c that is the real reccommended minimum. microsoft was pressured into saying that vista needs only 512MB, but to runn well,. it really needs 1GB.
if you REALLY want to upgrade, go to crucial.com and type in you computer model. they will tell you what kind of ram you need. you can buy it right from them, buti recommened getting it from newegg.com b/c it is a lot cheaper.

well first thing you're going to want to do is take a look at the bottom of your laptop and there should be a cover in the center or a large cover covering several items you'll need to remove that and find the ram chips. then you'll want to write down the chip type I.E. DDR400 PC 3200. once you have that information you'll need to determine the ram type if it's ddr2 or just ddr. also you'll need to determine the chip form factor typically so-dimm but could possibly be micro dimm the easiest way to tell is just by the number of pins, usually stated on the chip towards the end, make sure you flip it over to get the highest number, or check the labeling as it can typically tell you. once you have all of this information you'll need to get to a reseller like best buy circuit city or you can go online and order from places like tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. find the ram with the matching specifications and when it arrives snap it in. Remember when opening your computer to wear clothes low in static, stay off of carpet, and ground yourself to the computer before touching any of the circuit boards as one static charge to this stuff will more than likely ruin it.

1. Find out what the maximum amount of memory the laptop can address. I have a desktop at home that maxes out at 384M.
2. Be prepared to abandon the memory in the laptop currently. There are only so many memory slots. To get to 1G you will probably need 512M in each one (there are usually only two).
3. Check out www.crucial.com to see what it's going to cost you.
4. The actual upgrade is simple, if it can be done at all.

first off ... imo ur makin a mistake upgrading to a buggy operating system and should wait until the bugs are ironed out .. maybe for the first service pack release ... but other than that ... run cpuZ or the free version of everest to determine the type of memory u have ... then buy a module and plug it in .. load bios defaults .. then go to ur manufactureres website and see if they have all the drivers for vista .. if not ur up the creek without an oar or canoe ...
