My check engine light came on today in my truck which has 103K miles. I took it to auto zone and they said the camshaft position sensor is what was causing the light to come on. They said it's probably throwing off the timing of the truck and when I replace the sensor I'll have to have the timing redone. What does that mean. Is it expensive. Would it be better to just trade the car in and not waste the money on a truck with over 100K miles that has a few other corky problems---lock cylinder broken, heat/air only works when set to blow at 3 or higher, front left tire making horrible noise when reversing and accelerating.

Other than the light there are no other indications that something might be wrong with the engine. No rough idling, smoke, or sounds.

A cam position sensor is for the variocam system (it senses and adjusts the valve opening and closing on the cylender head with the ignition firing timing for optimum horsepower), so it would be just a sensor that has little to do with keeping the timing on the car straight. Those days of timing the car are gone with the new pointless and distribtorless engines. You will Not need to get the car re timed, the engine will take care of that on its own once the mechanic resets the engine with his computer.

Most likely it is the O2 sensor but who knows the autozone guys maybe right about the cam sensor after all.

The cam sensor shouldbe around $60, an O2 sensor should be $110, plus labor.

Good luck.

The car, 2002 blazer should run well to 170,000 miles before it will need some substantial repairs.

First auto zone what a joke cam position sensor that's a good one lol. most of the time with the blazer at 100k it's problem the oxygen sensor. if your blazer is ldoling rough 9 out of 10 times that is the problem. stay a way from advance & auto zone tecks LOL. go to a GM shop and plug it in to a computer that will till you.

That's a new one........ have the timing redone?
The sensor is relatively cheap.
Trading it off is up to you.
