will Rit dye work? any others?

I wouldn't go there. Your best bet is to take it to the cleaners and have them do the dying.

you can do it, but it is tricky.
First make sure the garment is dyable. Second, buy a cold water dye, like "dylon". They should sell it at craft store chains. Make sure to use cold water, and don't agitate too much. Follow the instructiuons on the package.
If it is your favorite dress, don't do it. If you are just out to experiment, have at it!

If it's a dry cleanable dress, I really wouldn't dye it!!!! I once washed a blouse that was supposed to be drycleaned, but it was too late before I realized my mistake. It shrunk badly & had to be thrown away.
