I recently adopted a dog who is 6 yrs of age and in his profile is said that he liked all cats, which was fantastic as i am a cat lover and i own one, but when we brought him home it was another story, he wants to eat the cat.
i have tried putting them in seperate rooms to get use to the smell of each other, holding the cat while the dog run around and vice versa, giving them both as much attention as the other, and i have run out of ideas.
Do i have any chance of getting them to get along?
I love them both and am not prepared to rehome either of them, but our house is like a circus, as both of them have been inside pets all their life, it's a constant rotating of shifts ie: the dog inside one night then the cat the next, will i have to do this forever?

They will get to know one another and accept each other in time. Just give it some time.

I'm sorry but this makes me think of the carfax commercial where the car is in a flood and the owner writes an ad saying that it has "slight water damage". It sounds like your dog is definitely a cat lover, unfortunately he loves to eat them. At six years old I don't know if he can be trained to leave a cat alone. You may want to visit an obedience school.

Had the same problem. Had to get the dog to accept me as the alpha male first, through feeding/food withholding, and handling/commands. Once he saw me as the alpha male, anything under my protection became forbidden to him as a member of the pack.
Then I had one of my children bring the cat close to the dog, who was on a short leash in my hand. When the dog lunged at the cat, I would stop him short, scold him and whack him in the head with a rolled up newspaper--not big enough to hurt, but just enough to get his attention. We did this for about 30 minutes for 2 days each, and at the end, the dog was letting the cat come near without being aggressive, and it has stayed that way since.
Word of caution--don't use the dog's name to discipline him--just scold him in a firm voice. Names are for good things, if you want him to come when you call. Best of luck.
