i took mine my junior year. it's better to take them anytime before your senior year, and earlier if you're not confident in your scores so you can re-take them. also, better to get scores out early for college applications.

At my school, we have to take the PSAT freshman, sophomore, and junior years - junior year is the only one that counts, though. The others are just extra practice so we get familiar with the tests.

You should take the SAT and/or ACT in the spring of your junior year, and then probably again in the fall/early winter of your senior year to try to improve your scores. Most colleges with January deadlines will take the December scores since they don't actually accept/reject you until March or April.

For early action and early decision (ED is binding - if you get in, you have to go to that school), you have make sure you get all your testing done by October or November of your senior year. You don't actually apply until December 1 of your junior year for most of these, and the main benefit is that you find out whether or not you're in by Christmas.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by applying early in your junior year... but maybe you were thinking about Running Start?... I'm not quite sure how that works, but you'd be taking off a year or two from high school, so it's completely different.

You can take the PSAT as a sophomore, but the time it counts for National Merit is your junior year. You should probably take SAT and ACT in the spring of your junior year so you have time to retake them if you don't like your scores. You don't have to take them more than once if your first score is high enough to get into the school you want, but since colleges only look at your highest score, it won't hurt if you want to try again. Fall of your senior year is kind of the deadline for taking them if you want to apply to any major universities because most of them have application deadlines in January/February, and it takes a while for you to get your results back. If you wait too late, you will be limited to community colleges, which usually have a later application date.
