Apologies for being dim but should the word 'national' start with a capital letter? I originally thought it did for some reason but now think I could be wrong...

Only if it is part of a name, a proper noun like The National Assembly.

N Capital Letter

'Nation ' is a common noun and national (derived from 'nation') therefore need not start with a capital N always. If it is part of a specific entity, such as National Resources Center, then N is spelt with a capital letter in the first word.
