very compatible. all u need is an USB connection or if ur using MAC then a firewire connection.

i use an external HD myself for my laptop for storage purposes

The external hard drive and the laptop must share compatible interface devices. Today, the most popular interface for both laptops and external hard drives are USB (universal serial Bus) connectors. If your laptop has a usb connector, you should have no trouble connecting a usb external hard drive to it. If you have a Mac, it may also have a Firewire interface. In this case you could also use a hard drive that has a firewire interface.

Also just to note.

Make sure if you go USB that your systems uses usb 2.0 as the transfer rates are around 400mbps close to that of firewire.

USB 1.0 has a transfer rate of 12mbps and if you are going to run programs from an external it can pose a problem.

USB 2.0 became common around 2003 I think
