Why in super bowl 36 when the Pats beat the Rams did the game end on the kick, there was still 2 seconds left?

I'm pretty sure the present rule is that no more than 5 seconds can tick off on a field goal try, not sure about then. There obviously was not much time for the Rams to score but it was a possibility.

Good question Adam...I thought the same thing when that FG went in. They just let the clock run out to zero. There was like 2 or 3 seconds still left...
