With watching the Superbowl game recently, I was reminded that each pro team will make up winning t-shirts/ball caps/whatever to celebrate victory. Now, in the case of the losing team (eg: The Chicago Bears ...), what ever happens with those clothing items? Are they just trashed? Donated to needy children overseas? Sold as collector's items?

There was a time when they were destroyed, but not usually the case anymore. They are often used as collectibles for donation to charitable auctions & the like.

They are referred to as "phantom" championship gear.

I bought an Orioles ball cap w "American League Champs" on the front (they lost) autographed by all of the guys at the event who had played for the O's at some point in their careers.

The event benefitted the Special Olympics, & had about two dozen Major League Baseball Alumni players in attendance.

I have no idea what it's value might be.

In the case of the Bears "Super Bowl Champions" gear, Reebok and the NFL donated the items to the relief org World Vision, which will then ship the items to poverty-stricken areas of Eastern Europe and Africa.
