I want to buy my wife a pair of diamond stud earrings. What size is a good size, without being overpowering? I was thinking 1/2 karat total weight. Is that too small?
Also, do you prefer round or princess cut?
Finally, I was looking at some better quality diamonds (near colorless), but I saw some that had a distinctive darker color that I thought were nice looking.
Would it be better to go with a clearer, more expensive diamond or do you think it makes that much difference with a smaller diamond? I like the color of the ones I saw (they seemed to have a blackish tent, but they still sparkled), but I don't want her to think I went cheep. I want this to be a special gift. I don't wnat to ask her because I also want this to be a surprise.

A 1/2 karat is a very nice size and princess cut will knock her socks off.

Happy Valentine's Day!

My husband gave me 1 karat total weight.
I think they are perfect, but we've been married 15 years. I guess they are like a long service award.
I prefer a brilliant cut (round) - more fire
Also clearer give more fire too. However, the difference in diamond stubs less than 1 karat per diamond is not worth the extra $$$.

Also don't forget to MAKE SURE you get a DIAMOND BOND with the purchase of any solitaire. My diamonds are covered for replacement against loss of any kind. Every six months I take them to the jewelry store to have the backs, post and claws checked. If they need adjustments they can often do it there for nothing or just a nominal fee. About every 4 years they have to go to the jeweller to have maintenance done. It costs money but worth it to keep the cherished gift from a very loving husband. If you need more info just E-mail me. Diamonds are my favourite thing.

Okay, I think a 1/2 carot total is a great size, no it is not to small.

Has she ever mentioned her preference, that you can think of when she admired a piece of jewelry?

When making a diamond purchase, I feel it is best to go for quality. It is something she will have for a long time.

The blackish tint, I don't understand, but a diamond should not have that tint, unless it is a "BLACK DIAMOND".

She would be able to see the color too, and that would not be a good thing. If the price is too much, get a smaller size now, later she can always upgrade. GO for quality over othe size.

When purchasing diamonds it is always the 4 questions CUT/CAROT/ COLOR/Quality/. She would love either princess or round, I personally like the princess!

the blackish tint you see maybe called "inclusions" those are carbon or other mineral spots inside the diamond... those make the diamond LESS expensive PLUS greyish looks dirty and I dont think you want to go that way. 1/2 a karat is nice and round is always in style princess cut never stays straight and they shift so you will have her wearing one diamond shape and one square by the end of the day. you also should know the colors and gradings for what you are buying. lower end of alfabet is considered not a good color. check a website for diamond info. also you may like
MOISONITE those are created diamonds they are grown from a smaller diamond but have 10 times MORE the brilliance and clarity of a regular diamond. created and synthetic are two different things but thats another question.
jc pennies actually has some good quality and when they have a sale it cant be beat! I used to work for limore jewelers in NY. thats what they told me. also if you go to a jewler who gets a commission you are paying extra! go where they dont make a commission and youll see the difference in price.
so round 1/2 kt maybe " i " in color is good for a nice gift.
good luck and know its the thought thats the real gift anyway!
i hope you behaved yourself! ;)
PS check HSN QVC you know those websites for good deals too.

I think a 1/2 karat sounds great! Diamonds are Diamonds. Perferably no dark color. And I also prefer a princess cut because you can add in you picked this cut because she is your princess. Just an idea. Good luck!

When you are shopping for diamonds look out for the 5c's.
Clearity- a diamond is worth it if it is crystal clear. Ask the jewler to see a microscope so you can look at it yourself.
Color- Diamonds come in many colors; Pink, Clear, yellow. Pick one you know your wife will love.
(c)Karat- The bigger the pricer. A 1/2 karat will be great for ear rings.
Cut- Princess cut is one of the most popular to date.
Certification- MAKE SURE THE DIAMOND IS CERTIFIED!!!!!! Or else who knows what your getting.

My wife is a petite 5'2" and 1/2 Kt TW works well for her. you might want to consider your wife's height and frame when deciding.
My wife prefers round but it is a personal choice.
A diamond loses a great deal of it's value as soon as you walk out of the store. To avoid this, look at EGL or AGL Certified diamonds. These diamonds are mapped and come with a certification. They come in many price ranges but don't lose much of their value and become more valuable over time.
The blackish tint you see are carbon deposits which makes the diamond less valuable.
Halogen lighting is a jewelry store trick that alters the diamonds color.
When you choose your diamonds, tell the clerk that you want to walk outside with him to see the diamonds in the sunlight. Bring a white card with you to use as a back-drop for the diamonds so you can see it's true color. If the clerk refuses this for ANY reason, you can be sure he is trying to sell you "junk" diamonds that are worthless, so find another store. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

I would go for the clearer ones. Take a picture of your wife with you to the jewelry store. Maybe that will give you an idea of what earrings will work best on her. A good salesman will try to sell you something you will be happy with. A bad one will try to guilt you into buying the most expensive pair. I don't know where you live but when my fiance (now husband) and I were shopping for an engagement ring, we found Whitehall to have the most down-to-earth low-pressure sales person. Don't go to Zales. They are a ripoff. We weren't fond of Mayors either.

i have my husband looking for a pair for me, so this ? is perfect!
go to a reputable jeweler, but it doesnt have to be an expensive one. kay, jc penneys, and even sears have a great selection and affordable prices. i went to friedmans... im looking at their flyer right now, so i definetly have the info...
their most expensive pair(high qual)for 1/2 carat is $999
their least expensive1/2carat(good quality)$299. the midrange is 599 in 1/2 carat.
you are married, what kind of stone is in her engagement ring?, princess or round brilliant. only because this is something she will be wearing.i prefer the round, only because my engagement ring is round... its all preference, princess cut is popular/trendy.
shell love whatever you can afford, because it comes from the heart.
one thing... PLEASE< PLEASE!! HAVE THE STUDS PUT ON SCREWBACK POSTS!!!
ITS SO EASY TO LOSE THEM!!! AND this is a gift from you!
also one more thing, you can get the earrings in white or yellow gold... see what SHE prefers, my ring is set in platinum, so i want the white gold. good luck and happy valentines day!!! sure would be curious what you decided!!!
