I have an old Stempel Glass Grenade Fire Extinguisher. Does anyone know what the chemical is inside the glass ball?

It contains carbon tetrachloride. This is a volatile liquid, whose fumes are heavy. when thrown at the base of a fire, the fumes try to smother it. Not a very good extinguisher, and both the liquid and fumes are harmful.

It is a wonderful antique, though

Most likely it is filled with carbon tetrachloride - a form of halon gas. The grenades were sometimes housed in a plastic shell with a soldered spring loaded piston. These were hung above potential fire hazards. The fire would melt the solder, the piston would then be driven into the grenade breaking it open and releasing the agent. Other versions were intended to be thrown into the fire, the liquid evaportating into a gas that put out the fire.

Very dangerous stuff as carbon tet is very similar to chlorine gas. Toxic in low doses. Not good to breathe or play with.

It all depends on condition, anyways prices can range between 40- to a bit over 100. But it also depends on if you find the right buyer, they are a bit more appealing torwards Firemen, since it basically apart of there history, and since its "ford" it's a bit more better since you merged into 2 different collecters Fire extinguisher collecters and ford collecters, it always good to have a item with multi markets, that means a higher chance to sell it in the long run, well good luck and have a good one
