Go to Barnes and Noble or another good book store and buy the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing a Novel" by Tom Monteleone.
I read that book, and wrote my first novel with its help. It just got picked up by a publishing company.
If you are into writing shorter stories, the book will still help. It goes into great detail about the writing process, scheduling time to write, and actually getting your work out there.

You've asked a question I've heard a lot. You need to have experience with people and a lot of patience. You need to learn your strengths and weaknesses in the writing field. Also, having a good sense of humor will take you far when writing a book. Make sure that you carry things out, but don't have the characters having a pointless conversation that drags on and on. If your writing a story and your bored, the reader will be bored too. You need to have an open mind about everything. Try to write at least once every day or every other day. Talk with friends about characters and make jokes..if you will. It helps your imagination if you make jokes or talk about them. And, of course, never give too much information, everyone loves a good surprise at the end!Hope I helped!

Read a lot. Write every day or as close to every day as you can. Show your work to other writers. Read their work in kind. Read more. Write more. Understand what makes a story or a novel tick. What makes a line, a paragraph, a chapter work. Read more. Write more. Read authors you like. Understand why you like them. Read authors you hate. Understand why you hate them. Write more.

Then, when you've written work you like, send it to publications.

If someone who publishes fiction thinks your work is good and includes it in their publication, then you'll be on your way.

Realize there are no shortcuts.
