Consecutive Odd Numbers
If x is any odd number, then x and x + 2 are consecutive odd numbers.
E.g. 7 and 9 are consecutive odd numbers, as are 31 and 33.
Example 20
If the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is 228, find the numbers.

Solution:

17, 19, 21

This is simple to find without guesswork. Divide 57 by 3 to get 19. Because you are taking odd numbers (2n+1 for all natural values of n) it means that the sum of the prior odd number and the next odd number is the same as two times 19. This is proven by:

2 * (2n+1) = (2n) + (2n + 2)
4n + 2 = 4n + 2

I don't know why no one showed you the equation that you need to solve.

Let x be the first number of the 3 odd numbers then

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 57

remove parenthesis and combine terms to get

3x + 6 = 57

Solve for x, we get x = 17. Therefore the 3 numbers are 17, 19, and 21

I hope this helps.

First create an equation. Label the first number x, the second number x+ 1 and the third number x+2

x+(x+1)+(x+2)=57
3x=54
x=18

This gives us the first number in the sequence...18 . So the second number must be 19 and the third number is 20.

18+19+20=57

Divide 57 by 3. See your results. Your answer should be the mean, the mean +2, and the mean -2.

Two methods of solution:
x is the least number
x + (x+2) + (x+4) = 57
3x+6 = 57
3x = 51
x = 17

OR

x is the middle number
(x-2) + x + (x+2) = 57
3x = 57
x = 19

n+n+2+n+4=57
3n+6=57
3n=51
n=17
17+2=19
17+4=21

The numbers are 17, 19, and 21.
