its kinda subconscious but rears its ugly head sometimes. a psychologist once said it was to do with my parents, my dad was horrible to me. so could she be but that was so long ago. I am quite a quiet person at times i get surprised when people do like and accept me.

Reading this made me want to cry. It is so like my own experience. I had a pretty awful childhood with very cold
unafectionate parents. I too find it hard to communicate
easily with other people and think I am shy, but I just don't know
how to be easy around people. I always envy people who can
go into a room and just mingle, I am the one sitting on the side
wanting to join in but can't.
Things got better for me when I had children. I realised it wasn't
my fault my parents didn't love me, my children did and that was
what mattered. I made myself become social for their sake and
little by little things did get better. It is a self esteem thing. Be good to yourself you deserve it.

Some of the answers above are probably not helping and making you feel worse. Don't let them.
The only way you can deal with this is ti get through the issues you have. Talking to someone would help a lot.
Even if things have happened long ago, they will still disturb you because they haven't been dealt with. It's hard to do this on your own, get the counselling you need and you will feel better about yourself. Make it your goal not to be a victim of your father's behaviour. Good luck!!

Who cares. People think I am shy but then they realise that I am just quiet sometimes when I want to be and then sometimes I am outspoken and controversial. A bit of an enigma to people.

People probably don't like you only because of the simple reason that people don't like quiet people, they are very suspicious of them and think they have something to hide.

How do I know? I have gone from one class to another, one job to another and learnt that people (mainly girls) don't like me because I stay quiet mainly, they think I think I am better than them (not far off the mark). Males tend to like me for some reason because they don't think as much as women.

If it bothers you, talk more and get to know people. I however am far more comfortable in people disliking me, if they liked me I would be on Yahoo Answers asking why they did!

Place this question in the correct category and you will get some help with your problem. Unless your dad didn't like you because you didn't know how to do laundry.

it could have something to do with your parents, the more abuse you take your self esteem goes down hill. therefore people sometimes think you are weird. but who cares just be yourself your real friends will like you for who you are.
