thanks for all the answers, but if this is its job (to reduce the glare) why some dumb players put it at night?!!!

It's a greasy type of paint stuff. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's to reduce the glare of the sun so they can see things on the field easier (since they obviously can't wear sunglasses out there).

At night time they play under really bright lights that can create a glare too.

Black Under Eye Football

Eye black is a grease applied under the eyes to reduce glare. It is often used by baseball and American football players, where sunlight or stadium lights can impair vision of an airborne ball. Traditional grease consists of beeswax, paraffin, and carbon. Patented antiglare stickers that emulate the grease are also manufactured, sometimes with a sports team logo printed on. According to Paul Lukas of ESPN.com, the earliest known instance of a player wearing eye black is Washington Redskins fullback Andrew Farkas, who apparently came up with the idea on his own in 1942.

A 2003 study by Brian DeBroff and Patricia Pahk tested whether black eye grease actually had anti-glare properties. The subjects of the study were divided into three groups: wearers of eye black, wearers of antiglare stickers, and wearers of petroleum jelly. The subjects' vision was tested using an eye chart while being exposed to natural sunlight. The study concluded that eye black reduced glare of the Sun and improved constrast sensitivity, whereas commercial antiglare stickers and petroleum jelly (the control substance) were found to be ineffective. A further study which set to improve DeBroff's methodology also found eye black to reduce glare from the sun, but less so in blue-eyed individuals and males

It reduces glare from sunlight or other sources. Basically, it allows players to see completely without having to squint. There are two types, one that resembles face paint, and one that is basically a sticker that goes under the eyes.

As far as wearing eye black at night, Stadium lights can produce just as much glare as the sun. I've played under the lights, and it's as bright as if it were daylight.

it keeps the sun out of their eyes. It's basically face paint. It absorbs light or something like that, so that players can fully open their eyes when playing, instead of having to squint.
Soccer players also use it.

Players mostly use black tape now instead of the grease cause the grease runs with too much sweat. I believe they use it mostly for the look when they wear it at night and during the day it serves the purpose of keeping the sun out of their eyes!

Its grease paint. It helps cut down the glare from the sun reflecting off of the sweaty skin beneath the eyes.
