John Charles was the first British player to make a name for himself in Italy, he is still a god at Juve.

David Beckham (LA Galaxy) It has got to be, I mean, well over 100 caps for England and still the best crosser of the ball in the world for me. His dead-ball kicks are legendary and he has had the best career he could have had at Manchester United. World class footballer, totally unique. P.S. There are only a few other Englishmen playing abroad, but no major ones.

Seeing as Italy, like most countries had (some of) their clubs formed by englishmen I'd imagine it predates Greaves. Not sure who it was though.
