According to the website for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the first Oscars were actually handed out in 1929, but not televised until March 19, 1953 at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The NBC-TV and radio network carried the 25th Academy Awards ceremonies live from Hollywood with Bob Hope as master of ceremonies.
