It is negative 20. You can think about it like a sliding scale.
5 4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 etc.
If you subtract a number, you move to the right. So 5-4 =1. 3-8= -5. So -6 -14 is moving 14 spots to the right of -6.

It is also the same as saying -6 + (-14) = -20.

- 20. You are already 6 below 0. Take away 14 more, & you are 20 below 0.
For example here is a number scale:

-6 take away 14 more, takes you down to -20.

I see most of the answers before me say -20. That's wrong. A minus 6 combined with a positive 14 (doesn't matter whether it's addition or subtraction) equals positive 8.

I stand corrected. It is -20. My above statement is still somewhat true, though. A -6 plus a +14 equals +8.

-6 - 14 is the same as -6 + -14 which is -20.

If you think of the number line, add (+) moves you to the right, while subtract (-) moves you to the left... so we start at -6 then move 14 places to the left. That would leave us at -20.

Had it been -6 + 14, we would start at -6 and move 14 places to the right, which would be 8 (or 14 - 6).

One way that you could approach this problem is pretend that they are both positive #'s and then add the - sign after combining them.
-6 + -14 = -20
If 6+14=20, then -6 -14 = -20
