The New X-men hasn't been out that long so you could read that. Also regualr X-Men started in the early '90s so that wouldn't be too difficult or expensive.

As far as Uncanny goes, unless you buy the CD-ROM that contains all 480+ issues, it will be very expensive and difficult to read all of them.

You're best bet may be to follow the spinoffs, such as Wolverine, Wolverine Origins, X-Factor etc....

Part of what is great and unique about comics is that they have such a long, complex and rich history. While it is great to be able to say that you've been there from Issue #1, because a book isn't considered a success unless it can stand the test of time, this may be impractical. Personally, I find wikipedia and marveldatabase.com (among many others) to be excellent ways of catching up on all the history. Graphics novels (compilations of the more pivotal moments) are also great ways to catch up.

As far as a good current, or future series? Might be a better question for your local comic guy, or you could keep up with Wizard, or comicbookresources.com , or ugo.com's comic section - maybe there you could find something that is up and coming, and be there from the ground floor.

From issue One?

Geez, you'd have to go ALL the way back to the 1960's.

The best stories come from the Chris Claremont era. He's the genius who wrote the Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, the Brood Saga, and many other great storylines.

DO NOT go by those horrible movies that pretty much bastardized Chris Claremont's wonderful stories, and butchered them beyond all recognition.

Uncanny X-men is good but you won't find issue one; Excalibur is X-related, issue one may still be out there, can't think of any others except the ones you mentioned.

I'm a big fan of Collossus and Wolverine. I'd like to have seen Gambit as well.

I would suggest the cartoon series for the evolution and x-men (what I call the original). Try dailymotion.com
