The moon contains more energy potential than the entire planet Earth. The moon dust contains Helium 3
A by product of the Sun. It burns cleaner that any nuclear or fossil fuel we now know of.
It is much easier to collect and utilize than solar power.
So should be go back to the Moon? Yes, in fact, we never should have left.
When China or other nations have unlimited power supplies and the United States does not, where does that leave us.

Nobody owns anything, at least not for very long anyway (75-85 yrs if your lucky).
We are born with nothing and we leave this scene with nothing. In between we attempt to amass as much money and wealth including material wealth as we can before we depart.
The moon belongs to no man. The only claimant to ownership of moon, sun, earth and indeed all bodies in space is the Creator God who made them and put them in their place.

no surprisingly there was a law passed that no country could claim to own the moon but it never said anything about an individual claiming it so some clever dick claimed the rights and you can now buy an acre for about 20 quid from various websites

No, they don't have active patroling of the moon and any population to guard it or anything else so, they can't claim the moon. They wouldn't anyway has it would cost them millions to take advantage of anything on it. It wouldn't be efficient to do anything with it. It is a wasteland. I don't think anybody cares who it belongs to. It's not worth anything.

The US does not own the entire moon, but does own a few pieces, which are now on earth. I saw some last week, it was a rock.

No, the Americans do not own the moon. They just like to think they do.

Other nations, worried about their national achievements, spend their money on looking after their next generation's education or health. But the USA decided to spend their money on looking about the moon.

A generation of Americans will grow up knowing that the money that should have been spent on their education and welfare was spent on what the world called the 'space race' - America needed, for some reason, to beat the USSR, and was prepared to pay whatever it cost their country, just to beat the Ruskies.

On paper, NO. But for all practical purposes, yes!

Who else can even get there? And once there, sustain astronauts for any length of time? The Russians? The Chinese? Not bloody likely. If we absolutely need it, it's ours, until someone else can routinely get there.

International treaties are routinely ignored, and under pressure, "shredded," all the time, when it suits a signatory to do so, so that that "it belongs to everyone" crap is nonsense. You think that if the people of Equitorial Guinea want equal time on the moon that the US is going to back down, so they can have their turn???
