He can try freelancing like illustrator. Look http://workfromhome-at.com/freelance.html for some freelance sites, that might help.

Honestly, he should concentrate on getting a "real job" first that will pay the bills. Any art related job rarely pays well, and they are 95% of the time part-time. He should think about getting involved in a restaurant or bakery where creative skills can be used. Granted, it's not on the same level as "regular" art such as photography, sculpting, etc., but the pay is far steadier and better. Truthfully, most art related jobs just don't offer much, ESPECIALLY to a freelancer.

Freelancing can be very relaxing and beneficial since you can plan your own schedules(i.e., what days to work, how many hours, as well as the most important your own fees!) Some of these careers are: Real Estate Closer (which pays actually pretty good, minimum $350 per hour), Decorator, Plumbing, Carpentry, Landscaping, Painter, Plumber, Private Investigator, Housekeeping, Tutor, Accountant, Translator/Interpreter, and many more...

I had the same skills, and I got a job in the art department at a newspaper. There I was able to be creative with advertisements, and also was asked to do occasional illustration.

He could approach advertising agencies, that's a more commercial way of doing it. He could also broaden into art in general and prepare work that could be exhibited. Both are time-consuming, and if he's stuck for cash he should probably consider the commercial path.

Sporting good stores always need illustrators. Now they have sewing machines that can use the curves in illustrator to make designs. In time, he could be inspired to create his own designs.
