Most likely what you have is a Siamese Betta. And to end a myth, because I've done it, they DON'T always try to kill eachother. I've had 2 live peacefully together. they only fight when a fish doesn't back down from another aggressive fish.

its a betta splendens -- pronounced properly its bet-ta not bay-ta like the greek letter beta. you can call it anything you want. i refer to them generically as little buddies.
