I my opinion (based on lots of experience) he was not playing the guitar. I believe he was singing over a recording of the guitar background. This is a common "studio" device. Lay down the music tracks first, then record the vocals with the music tracks playing over the earphones.
I feel strongly about this b/c of the heavy rainfall. If he was really playing the guitar, there would have been a few flubs. It was so wet that his fingers would have made a few mistakes. It simply didn't look like real playing given the conditions.
However, I believe he really sang. He was not lip-synching.

What if Prince has a "costume malfunction"? We'd have mass confusion about whether we were offended by male or female nudity! Cat Stevens. Get the fundy of both religions chomping at the bit before the 2nd half.

yes he was playing.. it is possible to play notes with the left hand while not strumming at all with the right especially with an electric guitar.. this is what he was doing.. Prince is a master of all instruments, he is the last person that needs to be 'guitar' syncing..

ahhh, for some reason, I like him. He has survived a lot w/out being 'out there', he's stayed true to himself and I do like his music. If you ever saw 'Purple Rain,' the movie, it was supposed to be the story of his younger life. I don't know if he was actually playing but it was raining hard and I thought the show was good. Better than years past!!! that's for sure!

Prince is highly underrated! I don't like most of his music.

i don't think he was really playing. I can't stand him.
I wouldn't be suprised if he was lip syncing too
