The word MANIPULATE has three usages or meanings :

1 If you manipulate people, you skillfully cause them to behave in the way that you want them to. Example : Small children sometimes manipulate grown-ups.

2 If you manipulate a situation, system etc you cause it to develop or operate in the way that you want it to. Example - The job of a manager is to manipulate and control of a complex system.

3 If you manipulate a piece of equipment, you control it in a skillful way. Example - She manipulated the knobs on her tape recorder.
