From my schooldays I remember that the Indonesion, and possibly Malay, word for cat is kucing (pronounced kut (as in 'put') -ching).

An alternate interpretation (for cat and kitten) would be 'lord of this universe', and 'upcoming lord of this universe'. True they only manage a small patch of territory (your house, yard, and all the neighbours yards), and only have a few domestic servants (you and your family), but they have 'total domination' in that 'little world'.

French - chat (pronounced "shaht")
German - katze (all letters pronounced)
Spanish and Italian - gatto
Portugese - gato
Hebrew - khatool (in that language, it's also a crude reference to female anatomy, as the "p" word is in English), spelled with Hebrew charactery.
Dutch - kat
Japanese - nikko
I think Russian is "kat" also (spelled with Cyrillic charactery, of course).
