First, you need good musicians.

Second, you need good musical equipment.

Third, you need good repertoire. (That is the fancy name for a good selection of songs with an arrangement suitable for your musicians. If you can get all of the above categories figured out, then and only then can you worry about becoming a professional band.)

Fourth, you need musical performing experience.

Fifth, you need a good manager and/or promoter and/or agent.

Last, but by no means least, you need a good reputation for being dependable. (Then and only then can you worry about becoming a great band.)

Of course you need good musicians and maybe a singer but you should not have to build around what the people want now. If you do that your music would not be genuine. Instead build around you and your bands capabilities.

You will require a drummer, one or two guitarists, one bass guitarist. The singer is often one of the main guitarists. A keyboardist is also required.

If you are looking toward a more classical sense, seek people who are skilled at playing the violins, and other instruments similar to that.

If this did not help you, go to popular band's websites and view the "bio", "about us" or "members" section of the page to fulfill all of your requirments.

You'll need some musicians, and a way to record music. Go to myspace and look in the music section, lots of people trying to form bands. Here's one that's new: myspace.com/natehousely

To make a great band, you should make the music for yourself not other people. Tool could care less about what the mainstream wants. They make the music they want to make for thier own sake. If you get sucked into making music that other people want to hear instead of what you want to make, you'll be another crappy, talentless band that brings no originality to the table. Don't make music for the money.

Be yourself, Sound like you, and Find musician's that you like hanging out with and have similar interests. More bands break up because of personal differences than anything else.

just find a guitarist, a lead singer, a basist and a drummer and start jamming. you don't need to cater to one specific audience. just do what you love, and if it's good enough, other people will like it. make a myspace page too to attract a fan base.
