I just got a role in another show. This is my third one now and right after this one I've got a fourth one lined up. Things are looking pretty good for my theatre resume. However I just found out that my scene partner for pretty much the entire show is this guy that I DESPISE. He is arrogant, egotistical, annoying, selfish, spoiled, full of himself, just everything I could hate in a person. He makes offensive jokes and thinks he's funny. He's notorious for trying to upstage other actors, which concerns me, because my friend got the leading role in this show and he and I are the supporting actors. How do I survive this? When I think of rehearsing with this schmuck for even a minute I want to vomit.

I think that's what defines "acting". Making it look as if you're happy to be there with him, when in fact, you can't stand even knowing he exists.

Just get your job done, and have faith that everyone else knows he's a jerk. You can only control yourself, so there's no way for you to change who he is...Just be the bigger person.

They're an occupational hazard I'm afraid.

The best advice I can think of has already been suggested - act like you like him. For goodness' sake don't try and upstage him or your other castmates will assume you're the same as him and treat you accordingly. If you've noticed his bad behaviour then so will everyone else have, so you won't be alone.

Congrats on the recurring roles by the way!

This is something you are going to have to deal with in life.Trust me. I am an actor and I am in a couple shows myself. In one show I help backstage by creating set pieces and bringing them out. There is one person who is so immature. He kicks and punches people and thinks he is funny.

I feel like hitting him but we all need to have some self control. Try just ignoring the person. I know that is not what you want to hear but it is the truth.

I know you want to hear some relevatory statement that will make you wonder why you didn't think of it before...but you have to figure out some way to ignore him. Find some way to convert your deep feeling of hate for this repugnant man into energy and feeling for your part. Trust me...I've been in at least two plays where almost everyone on stage was the same way. I tried to do my part as best I could, and I ended up getting several more parts and nailing 'em all. (the deadly signs of my chronic overachiever attitude.)

Well hon, if you are a decent enough actor, then forge your way through it. A couple of people on Sex and the City hated each other, but they handled it well, and it became a very big t.v show. All I'm saying is be professional about it and make it through it. As the old saying goes "the show must go on!"

Guess what? The SHOW isn't about your feelings or opinions regarding your fellow actors.

My advice to you is to conduct yourself in a professional manner...dissing your scene partners before rehearsals have even begun suggests that you're off to a poor start.

It comes with the turf. The more acting you do, the more schmucks you'll run into.

If you're doing it for money, look at it like any other job. You don't always get to select your coworkers.

If you're doing it for fun, just have fun. Don't let him ruin your good time.

No matter why you're doing it, remember: It's acting. If your character is supposed to act like she likes his character -- act.

This is going to sound like a flip answer, but I'm serious: You're an actor. Pretend that he's a character and ACT like you can stand him.

What you need to do is stay professional. Don't let him get to you. Do your thing and let him be who he is.

He sounds par for the course as far as actors. Just consider it a test of your acting skills.

Love the Character and hate the actor---then upstage--upstage--upstage.
