Flying seems somewhat moot as the plane has to go back through Toronto just for purposes of customs. Any other suggestions?

OK, I'm assuming that you don't have a car, as this is not a long drive at all. What would it be -- like 2 hours to drive it? Cross into Michigan in Port Huron at the Blue Water Bridge, then drive down (south) I-94 to Detroit. Voila! Yeah, about 2 hours.

I guess you could take a bus if you don't have a car. Buses are quite cheap. Taxis are expensive, and it's silly to fly such a short distance, as you said.

Drive. It's only about an hour once you get into Port Huron.
