it looks like pyrite, FeS2

if you powder it (or crush it, called streak), it should smell like rotten eggs (sulfur) the powder (streak) is also brown. streak is properly tested by scratching the rock along a porcelain tray. (you may can try the unglazed-underside of your mom's dishes with her permission)
crystals should have striations (stripes). crystals are cubes.
when you break it, it will not break into cubes (glassy fracture).

hope that is it! pyrite is very common and crystals are very inexpensive in the US. pyrite is commonly known as 'fools gold'.

It looks like zinc to me. My father worked in Baffin Island in the arctic in Canada at a mine and brought me back a rock that looked almost the same and it was zinc.

It looks like iron pyrite or galena.

Look on eBay; lots of samples of those for sale there, with photos.

It is really heavy? Is it magnetic? My guess is either magnetite, pyrite or galena.
