ask the judge - they will most likely ask you if you have an attorney yet, and tell them no, that you would like to have a lawyer appointed.

Most courts require that you apply for a public defender. Go to the court clerk to get the application. You usually have to pay a fee to apply (somewhere around $40.00) then they will set a hearing date and you will be approved or denied by a Judge based on your application. If you are approved you will be assigned a public defender by the court. Please note that many courts will not give you a public defender if you are out on bond (i.e., you paid a guy a fee to spring ya).

Alternatively, you can call some attorneys and see if they offer payment plans or if they will do pro bono (free) work on your case. Furthermore, you may contact the District Attorney's Office to see if they will let you work out an agreement on your on (some will some won't). Best of luck.

DO NOT wait until the last minute. Call the court and ask if you qualify for a public defender. You need to be financially eligible. He or any other attorney you hire will need time to prepare your case.

Don't really know but if you have a job, most likely you make too much money to use a public defender. You have to be piss poor or they won't let you. So if you're somewhere in between, you're screwed! You either have to bite the bullet or hire a lawyer which will screw you with the expense. So yea, either way yer fu@@d! Good luck though!!

Chill out. If you go to court and plead not guilty - ask for a public defender. Then, then set another court date forever from now and your public defender will call/write you.

If funds is a controversy see regardless of if or no longer the lawyer will artwork out a charge plan. additionally be sure that the lawyer you get focuses on criminal situations and is board qualified.
