Am I the only one who thinks that those buttons you can push at crosswalks are just a psycological experiment to see if we push the button? I dont think pusing that button makes the light turn red so I can cross any faster.

i have actually wondered about it a couple of times... i always want to know (these weird little) things for sure and hate questioning so i just try it out. After waiting for five minutes - i checked the time - i decided the button must be pushed...
i'm still considering the possibility it's all one big experiment that some crazy scientists are up to though.

Maybe you are. I've used these buttons for years, and they worked fine. Maybe the one you use is out of order. Or maybe you're pushing the wrong button...sometimes a pole will have two buttons, one for each traffic direction...I sometimes get them confused, which to use. Or maybe you're expecting them to turn the light red immediately. They follow an internal program logic for turning red...it may take a few moments.
