How many times is to many times to call and check the status of your app? After you had an interview?

Once, if, after a couple of weeks after the date that they give you as their call date they still haven't called.

Don't call everyday. I would say a couple of days after the interview, with a nice follow-up thank you letter to the HR professional maybe a week later. Ask them how long before you can expect to be contacted before you leave the interview!

I think once is enough. twice is too many unless you are asked to call and check.
