Ah, well, you simply divide using long division or a calculator.
so, 4/5ths would be
4 divided by 5
5 doesn't go into 4, so you extend the decimal place once to get 4.0.
5 goes into 4.0 8 times, so the answer is .8

Not a dumb question. There are several ways. First, if you were lucky enough to remember that all decimals are based on 100% or 1.00 so, remember? 1/2=.50, 1/4=.25, 1/3=.33 1/3, 3/4= .75, 1/5= .20. Let.s assume you forgot the most common ones as I just mentioned just divide the top of a fraction by the bottom----1/2 is 1 divided by 2 that is 1.00 divided by 2 = .50.
Also think of the change you have in your pocket. 1/4-$.25, 2/4=$.50. Notice the decimal point.
Did I help or confuse? Of course, it becomes a little more confusing when a person changes a fraction such as 2 and 1/2 to a decimal.
Multiply 2 x 2 and add 1 resulting in 5/2=5 divided by 2= the decimal 2.50. Also may be thought of as 2 and 50/100 or back to 2 1/2.
Remember always remember the base---100%

If you remeber from alegrebra a fraction is another why of writting division problem. Like 9 divided by 3 can be written as 9/3 "9 over 3" Any other fraction is the same way. 1/3 for example is 1 divided by 3. 3 can't go into 1 so you add a 0 and move your decimal point.... Well actually I guess you'd just use a calculator at this point quotiant (top number) divided by dividend (bottom number) will equal the decimal of the fraction. For example 3/16 = 0.1875. That was a dumb question, it's ok though.

You have to divide the two numbers in the fraction. The numerator goes on the inside and the denominator goes on the outside. 2/3 is .66 as a decimal when you divide it.

Divide the top number by the bottom number and you'll get a decimal. Otherwise, if you're doing it the basic way, you have to make your denominator 100 and then the number on top will be your decimal. So:
2/5 = 40/100 = .40
6/5 = 120/100 = 1.20

Do the division... for example, if you want to write 2/3 as a decimal, divide 2 by 3, which equals .666666666
It works for any fraction. (You'll probably have to round though)

Divide the bottom number into the top number. Put decimal point in the same place in the top as it was in the division.
