It's something of a myth that Moslem women are allowed to get their official (driver's license, passports) IDs with their veils on (in the US).

While it may happen, it's not supposed to. It's also a myth that liberals want to allow it.

What's suppose to happen is that the photo is to be taken in accordance with respect for the religion. This means, for example, having the picture taken by a women when no other men (other than her husband) are able to see.

The photograph, however, can be viewed by police of either sex, if needed.

Student IDs: depends on the school and their rules. These are not government issued IDs (even for public schools).

Govt. issued id's are not allowed to have a veil or any item covering the face of the card holder.
As for anyting non govt. that is left up to the issuing institution.
There has been court arguments that this is a violation of church and state, and their religious rights. However the court has upheld they must show their face inorder for an ID to be effective.

I think they do have to show their faces. Freedom of religion was never so absolute in this country as to avoid all compliance with local laws. The main example of this is the fact that the Supreme Court held long ago that the Mormons could not legally practice polygamy even though their religion encouraged it.

There are good reasons of security to require persons to show their faces despite what their religions might permit.

There have been reports of people getting all up in arms about women being asked to remove their veils in certain circumstances. Liberals are upset about (about not respecting these people's religion), all the while preaching about seperation of church and state.
