I am from Sioux Falls, SD and will be making a big move to come and live in the city of Chicago. We are two females in our early twenties and would like some advice on safe places to live, with some fun and entertainment nearby. We will not have alot of money starting out so affordability is key. I will be bringing my dog along, so a safe place for when I take him outside is pretty important. Thank you for any input you can provide!

The typical 20-something place to live would be Lincoln Park or Lakeview, but these areas are more expensive.
I have a number of friends who live in Uptown, Edgewater and Rogers Park, but these areas can be a little sketchy.
You could look in North Center, Lincoln Square or in Ravenswood. These might be a good combination of safe/cheap/fun and still in the city.

Check out www.chicagoreader.com. You can search by neighborhood and get an idea of how much rent is. You should be able to get a nice 2-bedroom for $1200 - $1500 per month. If you need something cheaper than that, you might have a harder time finding something you like.

I really don't think you want to live in the burbs. So, some of the cooler, less expensive neighborhoods in the city would be Wrigleyville, (2 bedroom about 1200 and up) Wicker Park (1000 and up) and Lincoln Square (900 and up). All these neighborhoods are great for young people and fairly easy for public trans. There are bars and parks and Wrigleyville is close to the lake.

You sound like you'll fit right in in Wrigleyville. Plenty of bars, plenty of cops (because Wrigley Field is right there, along with a bunch of bars and condos and, well, we gotta protect them, right?) and plenty of people with golden retrievers (I think they must pass those dogs out when you sign the lease or something). As for affordable, well, that depends on how much you two want to spend. You might be able to find something that you can afford on two incomes. If you can't find anything there, try Andersonville or Edgewater.

Sorry Girls there is really no safe place to live in chicago unless you have money. If you have money there is alot of places to live. If you are looking for cheaper I would say orland park which is nice and not cheap. I would also say richton park is a nice place. There are alot of towns you can live in. There is Oak Lawn and it is nice there and not far from Chicago. Good Luck

FYI...there is no such thing as a safe place to live...there is crime everywhere, even in the suburbs for the naive people who live there. I say Lakeview, Bucktown, Wicker Park are fun areas for young people, lots of clubs, shopping, bars, & good eats. Good Luck!

I live in Naperville. Which is always rated as one of the top places to live in the US. In 2006 in was rated #2. I really like it here. It is not too far from Chicago. Plus there is a lot ot do in Naperville.
