Tell them that putting on a public show would be a violation of your contract with Sony. If they need to hear you sing that bad, tell them to call your agent.

Perhaps you shouldn't be taking a music class if you're tone deaf and can't play an instrument...but since you're in the class and this is your assignment, no it's not illegal or against your human rights for the teacher to ask you to do this. Write a rap or hip-hop song then you won't have to sing, just basically talk. As for playing the keyboards, just learn a few chords and work them into your "song" here and there. Have fun with it!

No its not illegal! This is school we are talking about. You cant learn, so you are trying to get out of it? One does not learn to play a musical instrument after an hour or two. This is part of the class and people have been doing it since there have been music classes. You are not the only person that does not sing like whoever the current pop sensation is.

LOL! Um, no. Sorry. That is called an in class assignment. Perfectly legal. Believe it or not, it will help you when you are older. I'm amazed now at the numbers of meetings I have to lead each month. Getting good and comfortable with being in front of groups of people will really come in handy later on. A little embarrassing? Yep. But everyone else that has to do it is JUST as horrified. The best advice is to "act" like you aren't. You are sure to get an A. Confidence is the key to pulling off any public appearance.

Unfortunately, not if it's part of your syllabus which should have already been approved by the principal if not the board directors as well.
You could get your parents to type up (to look more professional) a letter requesting that you do something else. Like a book report on a musical artist, or something that is easier for you to do. If you have stage fright, then throwing up will definitely get you out of it. (don't recommend though).
But seriously, talk to your teacher first - alone - and ask if you can substitute your assignment with something you are more comfortable with. If she says no, then bring it to your parents attention, and see if they will help you out on this one.
If they say no, look at it as a learning experience. You may find that you actually can sing and that it will turn out just fine.
Have a little faith in yourself!
Hope this helped ya some!

Nope, not illegal. Simply express your fear to the teacher and see if there is a way to work around it.
Same with biology when I was in school long ago. Some students were excused from tearing up froggie, but I think that was more about the teacher not wanting barf on his lab floor. He made them do a model of a frog instead after class and they still got the lesson they needed with less sound effects. ;)

no it's not illegal to make the tone deaf sing it should however be illegal to make the rest of the class listen lol Just try just having some fun with it, since your writing it make the song about the fact that you can't sing show enough humor and your classmates may even clap for ya!

It is not illegal. You are in a music CLASS, what the heck do you expect.
If you do not want to "sing", recite a poem while playing the keyboards.
Or dress up like an astronaut and play the Space Camp song!

Are you going to be singing using a microphone? Try and get hold of something by a guy called Wes Harrison. He is a performer that doesn't sing. He uses the microphone to amplify sound effects such as galloping horses, cars braking, sirens, etc. I'm sorry, I wasn't able to find any examples on the net.

I don't think it is illegal. but i think it is unfair. not all people (any age) are gifted with music. your teacher should realize this. the assignment should have been more open to musical and non-musical students equally. you can express your concern to the department head or the principal. saying that you think it is unfair. maybe even tell them that you'd rather write lyrics and someone in your class who is more musical can make the music for it. In that way, you are still trying to complete the assignment and not trying to get out of it.

I wouldn't say it's illegal...I mean teachers sort of have the power to make you do stuff. Like homework. And if you don't do it, they have the power to punish you. It's their job. My only option for you is to not do it, and get really embarrassed and in huge trouble, though I don't recommend it. I know how you feel though, I'm the same age as you and hate presenting projects. But instead of avoiding it, I just did my best. Trust me, it'll be way more embarrassing to refuse to do it than to just do it, even if it's not great. Try to do your best and you'll do fine!
