Question: A question about racism???

Question Details: I was watching the news and saw that some white college kids got in trouble for having a "ghetto party" and had to apologize. I dont get what the big deal is. First of all im not raciest so lets get that out of the way. Anyways, it was just a party, how was it raciest? I dont think it would have been the same outcome if the tables were turned. Why is it ok when black people make in fun of white people but not ok when white people make in fun of black people? I really want to know. I hear black comediens making in fun of white people all the time and everyone just laughs, but if a white guy does it, you know there will be it least five black people there waiting to kick his *** after the show. Why is it such a double standard? I personally dont think those kids should have apologized to anyone, excpecially not to black people. They dont apologize to us.

I wasnt trying to offend anyone and im certiantly not raciest

I read the articles and saw the pics. i agree that the party should not have been held on MLK day, because I do have respect for him. But, I dont think it would have been as big a deal had black people dressed up as white people. That was my point.

Ok Harry. That happend before my time. And my ancestors are Cherokee and Irish so lets not dwell up the past. My first experience with racism was towards me, and before that I didnt know there was a diffrence between black and white.

I agree with you, Im black and I understand where your coming from..Its just like the n word ,most of us dont say it.but others use it so much...its agravating....Its a word that continues to separate us, then we say we want to be treated equal..we are the ones telling others what we want to be called...
It doesnt make sense and black people should not talk about white people because you guys get just as offened as we would, but the ignorant ones dont understand..they feel that what happened in past is Americas fault, and its not. Now is the time when we need to stop judging each other and learn better ways to get along...Its not that hard if we would take some time and have some respect for each other. We need to realize alot of people have it worse than us. So embrace your family even if they dont look like you :]

Well, you are white, I'm guessing, so you probably don't know how much racism (this is the correct way to spell it) is still left over. I agree that there is a double standard and I think it's just natural. We all have double standards. The main problem is that we still think there are innate differences between black and white people. Sure, culture's are different, but having a "ghetto party" what does that mean? What did those kids do that was offensive. I don't know much about the story.
Just remember, you're white, you don't have to deal with what others (not just african americans) deal with on a day to day basis.

Also, in case you were wondering, I'm white. I've never really been discriminated against, other than the classic teasing in school. I don't know what it means to not be able to walk into a building and get kicked out for the color of my skin. And you don't either. Think about it, these kids' parents went through this.
How would you feel if your mom wasn't able to eat lunch at a place because she happened to be German? It's weird. Put it into you own life and it will make more sense.

I am not sure what you are talking about specifically, but I to am not racist and it kills me when I go onto my daughters High School campus and hear on African American call another of the same race the (N) word. If a white child on campus call that same person the (N) word the whole world would stop to look, but when the two kids who share the same race call each other the (N) word that is a different shade of the word. WTF are they trying to do? I am sick of the double standard of what is socially acceptable to all races. I am white, come from a very redneck kind of family life (Gee I said Red Neck) about my own race. See how ridiculous it all really is. As for the Party if I have a Luau am I teasing the Hawaiian culture because I am not Hawaiian? If I have a Martie Gras Party am I insulting everyone who is a victim of Katrina. People need to desensitize and realize the Black, White, Brown, Green or Orange it comes down to who you are as a person not what ethnic past group you belong too. For all the African American teens out there who call their friends the (N) word for whatever reason. I find it highly ignorant and offensive and I am white. You may want to better represent.

Here's one problem with it that no one has brought up: It was a "ghetto" party, so it was more than just a party relating to African-Americans. There were some inherent prejudices involved. Like assuming that ghetto culture = African-American culture. That ghetto = African-American, period. That most African-Americans are low income, etc.

If an African-American-centered fraternity had had a "white cracker" party or a so-called "white trash" party or a "redneck" party, I think the outcry would have been just as loud.

Thinking of it another way, who would have a "middle-class suburbanite" party (whether it be for blacks or whites)? No one would.

It was such a big deal because those kids had the party in an attempt to celebrate Martin Luther King day. It was an insulting and inconsiderate way to celebrate a hero's legacy. Im attaching a link that has the news article in it that pertains to this. There is also pictures. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0125071mlk1.html

Well that is sad that the kids did such a portrayal, but they should have been left alone. It is Political Correctness way off of the chart.

For the same reason blacks are allowed to have BET and the NAACP, but if whites were to establish WET or NAAWP all feces would hit the fan. They think they are owed something by us because the some of their ancestors were slaves. Well, so were some of mine....The Native Americans.
