Good lord! I just watched him ask a panel "how much longer will we be in Iraq?" about 15 times, back-to-back, on c-span. He asked the same question over and over, with belabored words and and a bewildered look. the senators in the room looked pained, and the panel tried desperately to spell out their answers for him in a satisfactory way, but he would turn around and ask the same question again. You could feel the relief in the room when his time was up.

I understand he's been in the job longer than anyone else, but seniority doesn't make up for the fact that the man is senile. There are only 100 senators, and I'd personally like them to be all there in the head. Especially when that person is also 3rd in line for the presidency, like he is.

What have you got against senior citizens? Remember, the prior Republican President Pro-Tem of the Senate, lived to be 100, although he looked like he was embalmed years before . Byrd has years more to go to beat Strom.Thurmond, until at least 2017.

As far as these things go, after half a century, Byrd has a safe seat and can be elected every six years until he dies, because he has so much seniority he can get a lot of political pork and patronage for West Virginia--more than some freshman senator can ever achieve.

I think he should wait until he wins the Ku Klux Klan lifetime service award before he retires. And until at least 1000 government buildings/bridges/etc. are named after him. There's only 980 things currently named after him.
