most of the stuff on CBS and I think the shows on MTV are owned by Viacom

While VIACOM owns CBS and MTV and Nickelodian and Comedy Central and BET, many of the shows they air are from other production houses. Networks have no problem airing each others programming as their own production houses go to the highest bidder. IE Disney's production arm makes all the CSI that air on CBS. When CSI went into production the current ABC execs didnt believe in the show so it was shopped around until CBS picked it up. this is very common.

As for what VIACOM owns, You have NO IDEA. Viacom owns not only CBS Productions (Letterman, Raymond, and many other shows on CBS) they also own King World (a syndication house that owns Oprah, Dr. Phil, Wheen of Fortune, Jepordy and a lundry list of top shows), AND they own Paramount Studios which has another whole laundry list. It truly would take forever to find all the shows they own from multiple companies.
