Ive heard that you can claim back all the charges the bank has made over you, but how much should it cost you to get them to send 6 years of statements? I went into my bank this morning and they want to charge £5 for every monthly statement!?! Is this because they know what im going to do? Has anyone claimed charges from Nationwide Bank?

Write back to your bank, addressing the letter to the bank's data controller, stating that you require information on past charges (note: NOT past statements) under the Data Protection Act. The bank is entitled to charge £10 for this, however this charge is cheaper than getting the monthly statements. They have 40 days to reply to this letter. If they do not reply, write to the information commisioner (www.ico.gov.uk, 08456 30 60 60) and send a copy of this letter to the bank's data controller.

Hi Lorraine, I used to work in Nationwides Collections Department. I am sorry to say that yes to request duplicate statements they are allowed to charge a fee of £5 which allegdedly goes towards administration costs, Its completely untrue. This money goes into the pot of profit and helps fund training and staff benefits so its best to print off your own statements. If the charges applied onto your account which i assume is a flexaccount and has taken u over drawn at some point then i suggest u call one of my ex colleagues in the collection department. Please dont be put off by the word collections because 99% they will help u work out a solution. Once charges Nationwide WILL NOT close your account. Legally they cannot do this as this is an infringement on your rights as a consumer and if they close your account you are well within your rights to sue them. The number you need to call is: 0845 600 5707 and press option2. When u get through to an advisor give your account details etc and ask them to call u back as this will save on the bill your end. When they call you back simply mention the situation, they will go through a data protection act with u just to verify u are who u say u are. Once u have explained about the need to have charges repayed to your account ask for the address for the Branch Service Centre. They are based in Swindon and it is adviseable if u can to send any mail by recorded delivery as there have been cases of mail apparently "missing". It usually takes 5-7 days for the decision and if in your favour the money will be in your account in approx 10days.

You need to ask for a list of your charges over the last 6 years years rather than statements. Under the data protection act you are entitled to get a list of your charges over the last 6 years from your bank. Banks may charge a maximum of £10 for this.

They are using statements as a loophole as they are not covered by the Data Protection Act.

Basically you need to make it clear that you are using the data protection act to request a list of charges - and they have to comply with this.

Apparently they can only charge £10 for the lot but if you are going to claim money back open a new account with another bank because if you win, and you will, your bank will close your account.

they have renamed the overdraft charge and named it a service charge now and that means they can charge you the 25 pound fee within the law now. As for them charging you 5 pound for each monthly statement that's diabolical can't you print them off on your Internet banking site if you're not registered sign up and then you should be able to enter the dates you need then print them off good luck and i hope this helped you a bit
