Yes I know it's illegal. However just supposing I wanted to burn a dvd, how do I go about getting it into a file that can be read by a dvd player, at the moment they are all avi files, which won't play on a dvd player

use DVD decrypter and Nero also DVD shrink to fit it to a standard DVD disc
i know you are only supposing and i would never do this but if i did i think this would be the way i would do it. for back up only though
just for research i would go to doom9 for all the burning software

Sometimes encoding films from avi can take awhile . If you have a spare £40.00 it may be worth investing in a divx player ( it will also play many other file types including original dvd's and cd's etc.. ) and you can fit upto 6 avi films onto 1 dvd disc :)
or try DvDSanta which is quite cheap :)

Burning video files to a dvd isn't necessarily illegal.
You need DVD authoring software like cyberlink power producer or some such thing.

I use VSO ConvertXtoDvd - it will convert ur DivX(avi) to dvd and burn them - or will save them in DVD format - ready to burn another time

dvdsanta will encode it into dvd format and then burn it for you if you wish. Or you can just save the file and burn it with another programme.
