This is a question with many variables. There are no simple, stock answers here.

First, your Mom.

On the face of it, if this woman is your Mom"s "friend", how good a friend is she? Friend is a word that takes on an infinite variety of meanings at different points in many conversations.

If she is truly your Mom's friend, then there is, assuming your Mom is not of the "Mommie Dearest" genre, wherein wire hangers were daily rituals, there is really no contest as that this would be an effort that you would undertake with all of the same love and attention and respect that your Mom would deserve.

Only your Mom can calibrate the degree of devotion that her relationship with this woman recommends.

That being said, there is also a matter of the requirements contained within the project.

Should it be a matter of plug and play, where it is just straight forward hook up for desktop, then again the matter is simple, with little financial concern outside of what the woman may demand you accept as a small token of her appreciation.

If it is a full on network, blue tooth, WiFi, router, sequential fuel port thirty two valve all surround sound home entertainement integration, then time will be an element. And unles you are Steve Jobs, a financial consideration comes into play.

Finally, this woman 's financial profile is also to be considered. If it is one of Trump's ex wives, (no aspersions intended on your Mother's character ) then a tiny tap on the head of the cash spigot may be in order.

Ultimately, it should stand, in the best of all possible worlds, as your Mom's call, since it is, as I assume, the reason why you are there in the first place.

Oh, one other matter.. If you are in this business as a regular enterprise, that it as a profession, then you might be restricted by company policy, in which case another set of behavioral norms would apply.

Since I have already turned a simple question into a complex treatise, I will only post on that stipulation if it indeed does apply in this particular case.

Sincerely Yours,

Michael

This really depends on what they done. If you went to a shop it would cost about £50 to set up a computer. My normal fee is around £20-30 depending on who it is. If it is a friend give them something or say if they every need a hand you'll do something for them

Charge a friend?
For ten minutes of your time?
If she cant set up her own PC, I don't think she should own one.

Personally i wouldn't charge, because as you don't know the price its not a job you are doing, its more a favour...

But consider how long it will take. Think about how much the job should be per hour £7-10. And calculate it that way....

If it's your mums friend then you shouldn't really be asking for money, sometimes it is better just to do something nice for someone without expecting anything in return and who knows the same may happen to you one day.

How long did it take you? What do you want to make per hour? What is your time worth? Do you want to charge a flat fee? Are you helping the person out?

Just to hook it up, I wouldn't charge any less than $50.00. Seriously. To reinstall i charge $100.00. You have to draw the line somewhere, i only work on my family pc's for free.Once you start doing something for free for friends they keep going with it and expect it for free.

If you know what you need to do, it wouldn't take you long, and if you are doing it for your mums friend, just your expenses.
