Because reading is fundamental (hehe) seriously though, reading helps give us insight into places and things we may not otherwise be exposed to. I think the percentage of books the average adult reads a year has gone down dramatically in last few years as people are watching more televsion, and spending time on the internet.
I admire people who read a lot. When I was pregnant with my second child I read 15 novels over the course of 9 months, more than what some people read in a life time!
Books, magazines, poetry are all portals to other worlds!
