Has to be Michael Jackson. He was absolutely huge and you couldn't go anywhere without seeing his face on merchandise.

Well, I'd say that there were several:
1) Arnold Swartzaneger
2) Sylvester Stallone
3) Any of the brat pack: Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estavez, Mollie Ringwald, Demi Moore, etc.
4) Tom Hanks

I am going against the grain and saying Patrick Swayze.
I "had the time of my life" watching Dirty Dancing over and over again. I know Michael Jackson was huge but everyone knows that. Dirty Dancing got huge too there were contest, live shows and concerts revolving around this film. Oh yeah and lets not forget the one thing that gains celebrity status without being alive....the birth of Tetris....need I say more :P

For Music Madonna.

MJ was everywhere but after 87 his popularity started to wane. Madonna stayed popular throughout the decade and into the 90's.

for movies
either Molly Ringwald or Tom Cruise. Every guy on Earth wanted to do Molly (i managed to do a look alike) and every girl wanted to do Tom Cruise.

Got to go with Tom Cruise on this one. I believe his first role was in Endless Love in 1981 and by the time 1990 came around he had starred in such hits as: The Outsiders, Risky Business, Top Gun, The Color of Money and Cocktail. All considered "80's" movies.
