If he/she doesn't pass the achievement test, then he/she should be held back a year. Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying a student who gets held back for ANY grade is stupid or an underachiever. What I AM saying is the goal of the educational system is to prepare students by giving them the basic skills they will need to function in society, so any time a student is allowed to "slide" into the next grade without passing the achievement test, it ultimately hurts that student more than it hurts anyone else. The problem is the liberals don't want anyone to feel bad about themselves, so their attitude is promote such a student in the name of their ever-so-fragile self-esteem. Well, let me ask you this: How is an 18-year-old supposed to feel good about himself/herself if he/she can't even read a job application or can't figure out whether he/she got the correct amount of change at McDonald's?

Achievement tests are not pass/fail type tests. They test where a student is on the scale. What counts with an individual kid is how they do in their classwork. Many schools in the US have declining test scores, but you do not see kids in these schools being retained en masse.

Being held back one year in elementary school is often the best thing that can be done to help a child. Often his problems are the result of inmaturity.
